Indoor and Outdoor Sports - A Fun Way to Keep Fit

Health professionals are always telling us that we need to maintain physical activity in order to remain healthy. For many people, activities like walking and jogging are not considered a fun way to keep fit. For these individuals, engaging in sport activities is a much more enjoyable way to exercise. Outdoor sports activities have always been a popular and healthy way of keeping fit. However, there are now many indoor sport activities that are not only fun, but help people achieve a healthy lifestyle.

Participating in sports activities can help promote a healthy body and mind. The exercise attained from these sport activities will promote healthy blood sugar levels, increase bone density, strengthen the heart and lungs, improve circulation, and much more. During bad weather days, many people choose not play sports because of the outdoor conditions. Now people can keep up with their recreational activities by playing indoor sports. All they have to do is pick the sport that they find the most appealing.

Various indoor sports include:
Indoor Tennis and Racquetball: Many recreational facilities offer racquet ball and tennis. If this is your game, you know the value of a quality racquet. Playing indoors allows you to keep up with your game all year long.

Soccer and Volleyball: You can play these sports in your back yard or on a field, but there are indoor recreational facilities that provide these sports all year long.

Badminton: This sport can often be seen being played on beaches. Now you can play indoors during the winter season or on days when it seems like the rain will never end. All that you need is a racquet, shuttlecock, badminton net, and a person to play with you. To play badminton indoors, you will need sneakers with white soles so you don't scuff up the floor.

Indoor Golf Range: Thanks to technology, there are now facilities that offer indoor golf. You just bring your clubs and golf balls to the facility. There is a screen displaying a golf range where you can simulate golfing on a real range.

Indoor Pools: Grab your swim trunks, goggles, and nose plug, and head to an indoor recreational pool. It is a fun way to get some exercise.

Bowling: Bowling is a fun sport for the entire family. There are also bowling teams one can join. The prices are very affordable. Some people do not like renting bowling shoes, but for the avid bowler, there are many appealing styles available for purchase.

Basketball: Almost every recreational facility has a basketball court. It is a great activity for friends who want to get together and have fun.

Darts: Darts can be played at home, at a recreational hall, or in a pub. It is a great way to spend time with friends and family. There are also dart competitions for the real dart enthusiast. All that you need is a dartboard and darts.

Hockey: You can chase your winter blues away by playing indoor hockey. There are many athletic shops that will supply you with all of the essential gear such as hockey sticks, helmets, skates and much more.

You don't have to let stormy or cold days keep you from taking part in your favourite sport activities. There are many facilities that offer a variety of sports to keep you healthy. Combined with a healthy diet, playing both indoor and outdoor sports is a great way to get fit, socialize, reduce stress, and have fun.

Find Ways To Exercise At Home

Making the time to exercise should be a goal for everyone. Working out will help you lose weight and keep you healthy. A couple of examples of ways people stay active include going to the gym and playing sports. Some choose exercising in the morning hours and others in the evening hours. Exercising at home is another common practice. Crunches, pull ups and jumping jacks can really get the blood flowing. For a more intense workout session, get on a treadmill, elliptical or an exercise bike. You'll be able to break more of a sweat and lose more calories when you're on one of these machines.

Home treadmills are one of the more popular machines to exercise on. They're so easy to use. If you know how to walk and push buttons, you'll know how to operate a treadmill. There are different types of treadmill users. Use treadmills to shed some pounds. Or exercise on them to train for a marathon. Personalize your workout routine by customizing settings such as speed, incline, and resistance. Or follow built-in workout programs that pace you toward specific fitness targets. The ease and the flexibility that comes with using a treadmill is definitely one of the greatest rewards to this fitness machine.

The process involved with browsing around for a treadmill is a challenging task. This is an investment purchase that will affect your health and lifestyle. The specifications to each treadmill are different, and vary according to features such as the frame, treadbelt, workout apps, motor and cushioning.

An elliptical is another common choice for people to exercise on. Some people actually prefer ellipticals over treadmills because there's less impact involved, which means that workouts are easier on the body. The flywheel found on these machines drive the elliptical motion in the foot pedals, simulating the motion found in walking or jogging. Handlebars are built into most ellipticals to further help workout the arms. This design allows ellipticals to provide a complete workout solution, hitting both the upper and lower bodies. Ellipticals also come with built-in workout apps. Use pre-configured workout apps to guide you to specific fitness goals. High-end elliptical machines have the ability to connect to the Internet, thus enabling for the download of many more workout apps.

Before you start looking around, research the difference between front drive and rear drive ellipticals. Either of these types of ellipticals can be found sold by major fitness manufacturers. The design and technology behind front drive elliptical systems have been around for quite some time. Many of these machines are more cost-effective than rear drive machines. There are a lot more components involved with a front drive elliptical. Rear drive ellipticals are found on more modern models and use less mechanics to propel users. There are less parts used to make the system. This design also simulates a more natural elliptical motion. Rear drive elliptical trainers are very trendy among consumers these days.

Lastly, don't forget that exercise bikes are quite popular as well. Biking or cycling targets a completely different type of fitness demographic. Avid cyclists will go bonanzas over being able to ride indoors and outdoors. Enjoy riding in the comfort of your own home. Ride on it whenever you're in the mood. These machines take up the least amount of space among those discussed so far and they're the most affordable of the three.

Not all exercise bikes are manufactured the same. If you see yourself as being a casual user, you'll probably be most interested in an upright exercise bike. This bike uses a frame that simulates a traditional bicycle. The seat is place up high and the position is upright. Those looking for a more intense cycling workout should consider an indoor fitness cycle. This bike uses a frame that mimics those found on racing bicycles. There's more room for your legs to drive the pedals and gears on these models. Push yourself on one of these and get a power workout. Lastly, if you're someone that's rehabbing or you just need to have something that's ergonomic, a recumbent exercise bike is the one for you. These bikes come with a larger seat which provides more support through a better dispersion of weight. Exercise on a recumbent exercise bike for a more comfortable workout. Rehab doesn't have to be a painful process on a recumbent exercise bike.

Exercising at home is a wish that many individuals wish they could do. Hopefully this article has given you a glimpse of that. It's easy now to get a good workout at home. No worries about gym payments or having to brave the rain or snow. There's no excuse now not to stay active. Treadmills, ellipticals and exercise bikes can help you keep fit. These machines are easy to use. Make up your own fitness workout or follow a computer guided program. With the fitness promotions going on today, you'll be able to save when you buy on the web. How to Test Your Fitness Level

Below are some steps you can follow to determine which level you're on.

1. Run or brisk walk to test your aerobic fitness.

Run a mile or two as fast as you can. You can do it anywhere but make sure you run on a level path. A sign of top aerobic ability which is your body's capacity to transport oxygen to your working muscles is breaking the 10-minute mark. If your time is 12 minutes or above, it means you are quite slow, between 10 and 12 minutes indicates ordinary ability and 10 minutes or less indicates peak endurance.

Remember to practice running farther than your record speed to develop your aerobic capacity. Regular aerobic exercise lowers your body fat and cholesterol and thus lessens the risk of heart disease.

2. Do push-ups to test your upper body strength and muscular fitness.

When doing push-ups, lie face down on the floor with elbows bent and palms next to your shoulders. Then push up with arms until arms are extended, all the while keeping your back straight. Lower body until chest touches floor and then push it upward as you return to your starting position.

If you can do 13 to 15 push-ups at one time, your upper body strength is considered good. If your count is six or less, that means your upper body muscles need work. Remember that beginners are usually on their hands and knees while those who are more advanced are on their hands and toes.

3. Sit and reach to measure flexibility.

This is a simple method to measure the flexibility of your body, in particular your lower back, hips, and the backs of your legs. To do this, place a yardstick on the floor. Secure it with a piece of tape across the yardstick at the 15-inch or 38-centimeter mark. Place the soles of your feet even with the mark on the yardstick. Ask someone to place his or her hands on top of your knees to secure them and then reach forward as far as you can, staying in that position for two to three seconds. Repeat two more times, recording each distance you have reached.

4. Get on all fours for a balance check.

Want to check your balance? A simple method to do so is to get down on all fours and extend an opposite arm and leg without wobbling, tilting or shaking.

5. Monitor your progress.

With each fitness test, always keep track of your progress. Measure again periodically, such as every month or every few weeks. Celebrate every progress while adjusting your fitness goals. Don't be discouraged if it takes some time for you to reach your fitness goals. Remember, no pain, no gain! Just continue pushing your body and soon enough you will find yourself getting stronger and leveling up in your health and fitness goals.

When Is The Best Time to Workout During The Day?

This is a popular question from those getting ready to start exercising on a regular basis, "When is the best time to workout, during the morning, noon, or night?"

Sure there may be subtle differences between the various times to workout during the day however there is something far more important to consider. It is critical you take this thought to heart. The best time to workout is whenever YOU will be able to workout consistently. Period.

Consistency is key when it comes to working out, just as it is for eating healthy. Think about that for a moment. What good will it do you to eat one day of healthy meals, and the other six days of the week eat greasy, fattening foods? As you can imagine, eating in this manner will do your body no good, all due to the lack of consistency.

Same thing goes for working out. You want to develop consistency however that best works for you. If your goal is to exercise four times a week, first and foremost what time of the day will you be able to stick with that goal the majority of the time?

"The best time of the day is when you will do it most consistently, because the benefits of physical activity are tightly linked to the amount you do on a consistent basis," states Russell Pate, M.D., professor of exercise science in the Arnold School of Public Health at the University of South Carolina.

Sure you may think that waking up at 5am would be a great time to workout and you heard that an early morning workout kickstarts the metabolism into gear, but will you be able to stick with that plan consistently day in, and day out? Are you a morning person who has no trouble waking up earlier than usual and motivated enough to start running and sweating? If this fits your personality and lifestyle, then by all means go for it.

But if you know that it would be a daily struggle to drag yourself out of bed, put on your workout clothes, and start doing whichever exercises you have planned, then most likely a early morning workout is not for you.

"Are there differences in working out at different times of the day? Maybe. But those differences would be minor compared to the overall effect of doing it consistently," Pate said.

"If you're not a morning person, it does no good for you to try to get up at 5 in the morning to work out," he said. "Try to stack as many cards on your side of the table as possible by doing what's most likely to work for you."

This is especially prudent as you start getting used to the new increase in regular workouts. As your routine becomes a solid habit and you are no longer struggling with the mere thought of exercising, then it is safer to make adjustments to your schedule.

But for now, as you are just starting out, select the time and day where consistency will be your ally. By doing so, you will be much more ecstatic with the fact that your workouts are continually completed on a regular, consistent basis.

Exercise and Your Mental Health

The benefits of exercise are well documented. Cracking out some cardio on the treadmill, bike or rowing machine will help to lose fat, building a healthier heart and more flexible joints. Crunching out few sets of reps on benches and machines will get you higher muscle mass, along with a generally more toned appearance. But one of the overlooked aspects of exercise is that they extend beyond the physical, and in fact reap a whole series of mental benefits, helping deal with stress, depression and anxiety.

Heading down for a workout may feel like the last thing you want to do when you're feeling stressed or under the weather, but it's absolutely worth it. A brief run releases endorphins into your system, immediately lifting your mood. They're natural opiates, and create a lift in mood not unlike morphine. Getting hot and sweaty in an accommodating environment helps too, since an increased body temperate is proven to have some calming effects, so long as you're in a location where it's not undesirable.

These are immediate, physical effects. But the boost in self-confidence over the long-term has a tangible impact. Those getting involved in muscle building workouts will experience a brief swell of pride seeing themselves bulk up over the course of a workout. Muscles swell up after intensive exercise, and even if the size is only temporary the effect they have on morale is effective. Over time exercisers see their body improve and take shape, providing a massive change in mood. People often feel depressed or anxious due to the perception that they are incapable or useless, and it can be difficult to shake these feelings. Setting reasonable yet definite goals and then hitting them dispels unhealthy thoughts, while the improvement in physical appearance provides permanent growth to their self-confidence.

It's worth noting the distraction exercise offers. The reason depression is so prevalent among the unemployed is that boredom and a lack of direction leads to dwelling on your own thoughts. Having planned workout sessions brings a welcome degree of structure to the day, allowing individuals to remain intently focused on a single task for an extended period of time. Structure breaks the day into more manageable chunks, while only permitting thoughts about the immediate matter at hand.

Exercise has an immediate and significant effect on your mental health, though it doesn't have to be intensive. Even a moderate level of exercise, perhaps only 30 minutes a day, is more than enough to increase fitness and raise spirits. The number is an estimate, and doesn't have to be done all in one go, splitting it into 10 or 15 minute increments is both reasonable and feasible.

Moderate exercise for lengthier periods is the best way to raise spirits, intensive workouts are productive but also more stressful. Judging moderate exercise can be done via a quick and simple method, the 'sing talk test'. Being able to sing indicates the exercise is too easy to reap genuine benefits. Being unable to talk means the workout is too intensive. Ideally it should be possible to hold a conversation for an extended period, but not to control the voice in the manner singing requires.

How to Practice Good Sports Nutrition

Sports nutrition is defined as the study and practice of nutrition and dieting as it relates to athletes and their performance. It is mainly concerned with the types and quantities of food and drink ingested by athletes and deals with vitamins, minerals, supplements and organic substances such as carbohydrates, proteins and fats, which are the most important macro-nutrients needed to build the ideal athletic diet.

Sports nutrition is something you'll commonly hear in strength and endurance sports like weight lifting, swimming, cycling and running because these are the sports that require athletes to strike a perfect balance in order to sustain themselves during intense workouts and competitions. Sports nutrition is a concept that has been around since the time of the ancient Greeks, who credited their Olympic victories from being able to ably combine wine, meat and bread that gives them all the nutrition they need, as well as the strength and energy to win challenging competitions.

Sports nutrition these days has come a long way from the simple bread, meat and wine regimen of the Greeks. Continuous study has proven that diet along with specialized exercise and training routines enables athletes to lead healthy and productive lifestyles and helps them prevent or manage non-chronic diseases like non-insulin dependent diabetes, hypertension, coronary heart disease and osteoporosis to name a few.

What you eat and what you drink greatly affects your performance and how you feel during your workouts/training which is why knowing your basics on sports nutrition can not only help keep you healthy but also ensure you make the most of your exercise routine. It is known to often focus on carbohydrates, an example of which is the training routine of endurance athletes, who load up on carbohydrates days before their event to boost their performance. It is also best to complement your diet regimens with the best sports supplements as well to take care of any nutritional gaps.

Sports nutrition goes beyond what you eat because you need to consider the times when you need to eat as well as coordinating your meals, snacks and drinks helps you maximize your workout. For starters, you need to eat something every 2-4 hours to keep your blood sugar levels stable and your energy high enough to boost your metabolism. By coordinating your meals and snacks, you make sure that you are never too hungry to reach for the nearest bag of chips and will be able to train at any time during the day.

Ideally, you will need to eat a pre-exercise meal that will depend on the kind of exercises and workouts you do but generally they should be food that is easily digestible and high in complex carbohydrates like pasta, breads, salads and fruits. You can also go for a big salad that is high in protein or select a small amount of lean meat like chicken or fish. If you're the type who likes to train or exercise in the morning, a light snack of fruits, toast and an egg will probably be best.

On the other hand, if you would prefer to have a snack thirty minutes before you start your workout, it would be best to partake of trail mix, half a granola bar, a big banana or a few graham crackers to get your energy levels going. Remember though, to drink lots of water before you start working out so you can replenish the electrolytes you lose when you sweat. Make sure you keep yourself hydrated before, during and after your training and workouts to keep from being dehydrated.

To maximize your training and exercise, you need the best supplements to complement your sports nutrition efforts. Find them all at affordable prices on http://www.nutritionwarehouse.com.au and be at the top of your game every time, all the time.

5 Outdoor Activities to Keep Fit

In this article you will read about the different exercise activities you can do to start your journey to a fitter and slimmer you. You will also get top tips about the exercises.

1. Walking is the easiest and cheapest exercise of all - it burns fat if you keep a good pace, pump your arms and walk on an incline whenever possible. It tones your buttocks and all the muscles in your legs and is safer for your back and joints than running.

Walking 4,000 steps a day will benefit your health, 7,000 steps will improve your fitness and 10,000 steps will help you lose weight. You can accumulate these steps throughout the day as you go about your usual activities as well as planned workouts. To find out how many steps you take, attach a pedometer - a simple gadget that measures steps, distance and calories burned - to your belt.

A pair of good shoes is a must. If you intend walking regularly it's worth investing in proper fitness walking shoes. They should feel roomy around the toes, provide good cushioning under the heel, and feel comfortable and light (so your legs don't bear too much extra weight).

Top walking tips:

Concentrate on keeping a good posture by relaxing your shoulder muscles, keeping your shoulders down (not back), and ribcage slightly lifted.

Hold your arms relaxed, close to the body, and hands cupped. Avoid swinging your arms across your body.

As you walk, land on your heel and transfer your weight onto the ball of your foot, rolling the foot in a smooth heel-to-toe movement.

Stick to a comfortable stride length so your body is not forced to rotate through the hips.

Keep your hips, knees and feel aligned - your feet should point directly forwards (this may feel awkward at first).

Keep your body upright or angled just slightly forwards.

2. Hiking on trails and tracks or up a hill is much more fun than pounding the pavements. It is also a massive calorie burner (up to 500 calories per hour) and the varying terrain improves your fitness quicker than walking on the flat.

Wear several thin layers - comprising modern wicking fabrics such as Cool-Max for maximum coolness - rather than one thicker layer. In hot weather wear loose lightweight clothing that is sweat permeable and light colored. Do not struggle uphill wearing waterproof clothing.

Take a hat to prevent heat loss in the winter, and to protect your head from the sun and prevent overheating in the summer. Walking boots or shoes with molded grip-giving soles are a must if the ground is at all hilly or rough. Fitting should be snug but not overtight (you should be able to wiggle your toes without them touching the front of the boot).

Top hiking tips:

Keep your neck and shoulders relaxed. Look forwards rather than down.

Keep your arms tucked in close to your body.

Concentrate power in your back leg and foot as you push off the ground.

Find a comfortable stride length - keep it short so you won't rotate through the hips.

Hold your abdominal tight to keep your torso stable and strong.

Keep your knees and feet aligned - your feet should point directly forwards.

3. Cycling - get on your bike for a calorie-burning ride. It improves your heart and lungs, burns fat (450 calories per hour), tones the muscles in your thighs, buttocks and lower legs and strengthens the lower back and stomach muscles. Cycling to and from work or the shops integrates exercise into your daily activities, while cycling for fun is a great way to explore the countryside.

Always wear a well-fitting helmet - test this by putting the helmet on and shaking your head. It should not flop around or fall forwards.

If you have knee problems, make sure the seat is high enough and the tension is low - keep in a lower gear.

If you have back trouble, avoid bending forwards in the saddle. Cycling on an indoor bike, which is more upright, should relieve the strain.

For maximum fat-burning, aim to maintain a brisk pedaling cadence, between 80 and 110rmp - use lower gears or reduce the tension on an indoor bike. For best muscle tone, use a higher gear or increase the tension. You'll need to drop your pedaling cadence to between 60 and 90rmp.

Off-road cycling requires more upper-body strength and greater balance than road cycling. However, the rewards are a traffic-free environment and more interesting scenery.

Top cycling tips:

Check your saddle height - in the downward phrase of cycling action, your leg should be extended but bent very slightly at the knee.

Keep your neck and shoulders relaxed - avoid tensing your shoulders; ensure there is a good distance between your ears and shoulders.

Keep a neutral spine position in the saddle - keep as upright as possible and don't allow your back to slump forwards.

Hold your stomach muscles tight - this will help to stabilize you.

Your toes should point downwards slightly as you push down - this prevents tension in the calf muscles.

Use toe clips - this allows you to use the muscles at the front and back of your legs to power the movement. Without clips, only the muscles at the front of the legs get worked.

4. Running is one of the simplest ways to get fit - there's no special equipment or membership fees and, even if you are very busy, you can fit it into your schedule. It tones your thighs, hips, calves and buttocks. A slow run will burn around 175 calories in 20 minutes; a faster pace burns 260 calories.

Make sure that you feel confident with fast walking first - you should be able to walk for 30 minutes easily. Begin with interval running where you run for short periods then fast walk until you recover. Continue to repeat the pattern. Gradually make the running intervals longer and build up the length of your workout. Eventually you'll be able to run for longer periods without needing to stop and walk.

Because running is a high- impact activity, it is not suitable for people with knee problems.

A good pair of running shoes is a must, rather than all-round trainers - they are designed to strike the ground properly, reducing the amount of shock that travels up your leg. They should fit your feet snugly, provide good cushioning on the heel and be flexible enough to allow you to bend your feet naturally.

Top running tips:

Keep your shoulders back and down in a relaxed comfortable position.

Use the power in your glutes (buttocks) and hamstrings (back of legs) to propel your body forwards.

Land on your heels and roll through the whole foot - your toes should be last thing to leave the ground.

Keep your feet close to the ground and take care not to bounce as you run.

Keep your arms and hands loose and tension free (don't clench your fists).

Use a natural backwards and forwards swing with your arms- but don't exaggerate the action.

5. Swimming gives a great all-round workout. It tones all the major muscles in the body and is kinder to your joints and back than land training. If you are new to exercise or are prone to back problems, it's a particularly effective way of getting fit. It burns between 240 and 300 calories per 30 minutes. It is good for maintaining flexibility, especially around the shoulders.

If you are new to swimming, use a float to provide buoyancy. Hold it in front of you with both hands as you kick your legs. Intersperse water walking with length swimming to increase your total exercise time.

Water can feel relaxing but if you are trying to improve your fitness you will need to push yourself. You should not able to talk comfortably - just one-word answers if pushed!

Top swimming tips (front crawl):

For a really effective workout it's best to use stronger strokes such as the front crawl.

Turn your head to the side to breathe in, bringing out the water.

Reach directly in front of you. Keep you hand slightly cupped as you pull through the stroke.

Pull through the central line of the body, keeping the arm slightly bent.

Kick from the hip, using the entire leg, not just the lower portion.

Concentrate on keeping your hips level and aim to minimize rotation of your body.

Weight Loss and Exercise Programs - What Exercises Are Best?

Weight loss and exercise programs. Yes, these share a positive relationship but exercise helps you to lose your excess weight in more ways than one. Exercises can be divided into aerobic and anaerobic exercises. I shall go into detail on both so that you are informed so that you can make informed choices on which exercises to do to aid your weight loss.

What are aerobic exercises? Aerobic exercises hinge on you breaking into a sweat as you work at moderate intensity over a period of half to one hour. This works your heart and lungs, taking in more oxygen for you to deal with the exercise. The energy used will come from your body fat and the fat burning process will continue a few hours after your workout. Thus, to some it up, weight loss and exercise programs is true because aerobic exercises burn fat directly. Suitable exercises are jogging, swimming or singles tennis. Team sports are not very ideal aerobic exercises since you unwittingly get periods of rest, allowing your heart rate to drop.

Anaerobic exercises on the other hand, allow you to rest in between due to the high amount of elbow grease needed. You also may or may not perspire. Think of doing repetitions in an air-conditioned gym and the time lapsed and the few minutes rest required between each set. For anaerobic exercises, you do not take need to take in as much oxygen. As a result, it is carbohydrates (not fat) that is burnt, but is also essential in any weight loss program. This may not seem in line with your equation of weight loss and exercise. However, you are burning fat, but indirectly. Due to the explosive nature of anaerobic exercises, it builds up your muscles, revving up your metabolic rate and burning fat even after your exercise!

From experience, weight resistance training is definitely more effective in weight loss than aerobic exercise. Hitting the gym regularly made me hungry and I could help myself in all my favourite foods without gaining weight. Weight training gives you a higher metabolic rate 24hours of the day, Why? Muscles need to be "maintained", and these "feed" on fat. Thus, the reason why some people feel hungry all the time yet they do not gain weight.

On the other hand, the relationship between weight loss and exercise programs was less for aerobic exercises,. I found out that my appetite shrunk when I switched to doing only aerobic exercises. As fat is burnt only during the workout and a awhile after. you have to exercise frequently and for longer periods to cast off weight.

Knowing this, one should not run to the gym and start training like a ferocious animal. A improvement in fitness should be attained gradually to prevent injury. Slow and steady is the way to go for weight loss and exercise programs.

The Real Truth About Exercise - You Are Never Too Old

There seems to be a quite commonly held belief by a lot of people that as you get older you are less able to exercise and not able to achieve the same level of fitness as a younger person. However the real truth is that aside from the obvious limitations of some age related aches and pains, and the need for a medical checkup before starting an exercise program, the human body responds to exercise in the same manner regardless of age. And exercise can halt many of the supposed age related conditions that affect us in our golden years.

As a personal trainer that has trained many older clients over the years it can be somewhat frustrating when a client says to me that they can't perform a particular exercise because they are too old. On the other hand it can be very gratifying to see a client achieve something that they didn't think they would be able to achieve because of their age.

In terms of age and exercise, the human body responds to exercise in the same way regardless of age. In saying that it is important to be sensible when starting an exercise program if you have not exercised in a while, or perhaps ever. Get a clearance from your doctor before you start. And seek the professional advice of a personal trainer before you start. If you have joint pain or another medical condition it may be necessary to modify your exercise program to suit your particular circumstances.

Weight training is a great way to maintain your physical function as you get older. As we age we tend to lose muscle mass, often as a result of reduced physical activity. Strength training is a great way to stop and reverse this muscle loss. Maintaining your strength as you get older is a great way to ensure that you enjoy a high quality of life as you get older rather than limit yourself as a result of reduced physical function.

And cardiovascular exercise is a great way to maintain a healthy heart and a higher level of aerobic fitness. Regular exercise is a great way to maintain a healthy weight and reduce the likelihood of developing diseases like diabetes and osteoporosis. Many chronic health conditions are not related to age, but more related to reduced physical activity and leading a sedentary lifestyle.

So why not maintain your quality of life or even improve it by undertaking a regular exercise program. It does not matter if you are 40, 50 or 80 you can still exercise. Obviously this article is not about the specifics of a training program for you but if you would like more information about how to get fit after 40 [http://www.getfitafter40.com] visit my website.

Maintaining a healthy weight and lifestyle as we get older is all about making sure that we maximise our physical function through a regular exercise program. For more information about how to get fit after 40 [http://www.getfitafter40.com] and sample exercise programs visit my website.

Physical Fitness and You

Physical fitness is to the human body what fine-tuning is to an engine. It is not a race, it's a pursuit. In its most general meaning, physical fitness is a general state of good physical health. It is a foundation for a long and successful life.

Physical fitness is usually measured by periodic tests measuring strength, endurance, agility, coordination, and flexibility. Physical fitness is the capacity of the heart, blood vessels, lungs, and muscles to function at optimum efficiency.

It has two meanings -- General fitness (a state of health and well-being) and specific fitness (the ability to perform specific aspects of sports or occupations). Physical Fitness is important, even on bed rest.

A general-purpose physical fitness program must address the following essentials:

Cardiovascular Fitness: It is the ability of the circulatory and respiratory systems to supply oxygen to muscles during continuing physical activity.

Regular exercises enable more blood to be pumped with each stroke of heart.

Flexibility Training: Stretching increases the range of motion of a joint. It improves suppleness.

Strength Training: Strength training is the use of resistance to muscular contraction to build the strength, and size of skeletal muscles.

Muscular Endurance: Endurance is the ability to exert for a long period of time. In humans, it is usually used in aerobic or anaerobic exercise.

Body Composition: In physical fitness, body composition is used to describe the percentages of fat, bone and muscle in human bodies.

Fitness

Fitness, most importantly cardio-respiratory fitness, has been directly correlated to the mortality rate. Fitness can be described as a condition that helps us look, feel, and do our best.

In previous years, fitness was commonly defined as the capacity to carry out the day's activities without undue fatigue. These days, physical fitness is considered a measure of the body's ability to function efficiently and effectively in work and leisure activities, to be healthy, to resist diseases, and to meet emergency situations.

Many sources also cite mental and emotional health as an important part of overall fitness. This is often presented in textbooks as a triangle made up of three sub-sections, which represent physical, emotional, and mental fitness.

Physical fitness involves the performance of the heart, lungs, and muscles. And, since what we do with our bodies also affects what we can do with our minds, fitness influences to some degree qualities such as mental alertness and emotional stability.

People normally prefer walking for fitness activities followed in order by: swimming, fishing, bicycle riding, camping, golf, bowling, exercise equipment, hiking, hunting, aerobics, calisthenics, jogging, and tennis. Women prefer fitness-related indoor activities and men prefer outdoor sports.

The top level of physical fitness tends to mesh physiology and psychology. The exercises improve function of the muscular and skeletal systems, enhance circulation, augment energy and elevate overall individual levels of fitness. The level of physical fitness can be influenced by regular, systematic exercise.

As energy depends on nutrition, proper nutrition is important to physical fitness. If diet is not adequate, the fitness level will drop. Overweight, underweight, and weak individuals will have below average fitness levels.

Exercises

Exercise that doesn't raise your heart rate to a certain level and keep it there for 20 minutes won't contribute significantly to cardiovascular fitness. It is better to select exercises that involve total body involvement.

Such exercises improve and maintain fitness most effectively -- e.g. Running, swimming, golf, dancing, cycling, and brisk walking. The correct exercises will help you decrease body fat and increase or maintain muscle mass.

By performing many different exercises for a low number of repetitions, the muscles are strengthened, elongated and toned without creating bulk. Total concentration on the body during each exercise emphasizes movement quality, coordination and breath.

Health

Healthy people have more active and more interesting life. Physical fitness can also prevent or treat many chronic health conditions brought on by unhealthy lifestyle or aging.

To stay healthy it's important to participate in physical activity. Even those of us who haven't always led active lifestyles, increasing our physical activity now will help us live longer & healthier lives.

To live a full and healthy life, exercise must be a part of it. It is the ability to endure, to bear up, to withstand stress, to carry on in circumstances where an unfit person could not continue, and it is a major basis for good health and well-being. A physically fit body has less chance of acute health problems and chronic disease.

Major Benefits of Physical Fitness:

o Feel fresh

o Reduce chance of heart attack & stroke

o Reduce the chances of developing adult onset diabetes

o Reduce chances of being overweight

o Manage stress efficiently

o Experience more energy

Fitness - Just What Do We Mean When We Talk About Fitness

There are numerous definitions of fitness today but one that has stood the test of time was that proposed by Aristotle around about 2,500 years ago. He put it quite simply when he said that something that is well suited to its purpose is fit. If we look at the human body and examine its skeleton, muscles, lungs, cardiovascular system and endocrine system I think it is fair to say that it is suited to its purpose.

However, while the human body may be well suited to its purpose and therefore fit, it will only stay that way with regular exercise for each and every one of its component parts.

For example, physical activity causes your heart to work harder, increasing blood flow which both floods the body with fresh oxygen and removes waste products.

Similarly, exercise increases your lung capacity so that it can draw in extra oxygen to bathe the tissues and help power the heart. Greater lung capacity also means greater exhalation to remove harmful carbon dioxide, which is a waste product of certain chemical reactions within the body.

Regular, exercise helps to increase High-Density Lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol (which is one 'good' form of cholesterol. It also helps to regulate blood sugar levels and converts stored fat into sugars that are used to provide energy. This process helps to prevent obesity and is important in the control of such conditions as diabetes.

All of these benefits, while very real, are also largely unseen but other benefits of a regular fitness program are more obvious and include an increased muscle mass, toned legs, arms, stomach, buttocks, and a generally healthier looking skin. At the same time exercise provides greater strength, improved balance, higher endurance and, more often than not, a better mental outlook on life.

Of course different forms of exercise routine will concentrate on different areas of the body. Aerobic routines will help the cardiovascular and pulmonary systems, weight training builds muscle tone and mass, pilates and yoga aid balance, flexibility and muscular control. But, while each of these may focus on particular areas, they all help to improve fitness throughout the body, since the various systems of the body are all inter-connected.

Best of all, these benefits, at least to some extent, can be achieved with a minimum of daily effort. Moderately intense activity for as little as 20 to 30 minutes each day, five days a week, will go a long way toward improving your overall fitness.

A number of simple activities which provide excellent exercise can be performed without the need for any special training or equipment. These might include a brisk walk, a short daily jog or even simply taking the stairs rather than the elevator.

More vigorous activity such as playing tennis, a few laps in the swimming pool, an hour on the treadmill or exercise bike, or any of a dozen other activities, can increase your fitness considerably with only a small investment of time and money.

For those who are really committed to achieving a high level of fitness then there are numerous gym available and just about every kind of home fitness equipment imaginable can be purchased today at prices to fit all budgets.

Some Startling Revelations About Exercise, Fitness and Health

I watched a television program the other night about fitness: the program was actually about the latest research into health and fitness.

It centred mainly on research that was being done at the University of Nottingham in the UK.

It had come to some startling revelations about exercise.

The first was that if you don't exercise the fat levels and cholesterol builds up in your blood stream often to an alarming level. So a sedentary life style was not to be recommended. Any movement was highly beneficial: even standing was to be much preferred to sitting down and standing with a bit of movement had many benefits. The main benefit was that the fat levels and cholesterol levels in the blood dramatically decreased having major health benefits. So any kind of exercise was preferable to none.

So the next question was how much exercise do we really need?

It turns out we don't need that much: the body has a kind of switch that triggers with a relatively low level of exercise. This switch, once triggered, imparts many benefits to the body such as reducing fat levels and cholesterol and even influences aerobic fitness.

Now, it turns out that this low level of exercise is 20 seconds three times on an exercise day; and the exercise days are just three times in a week. So what you do is go as hard as you can on an exercise bike for twenty seconds: this flicks the switch in the body; then you rest for a minute or two and again go as hard as you can for twenty seconds. The rest would then be repeated followed by a third time of going as hard as you could on the exercise bike. In effect, all you are doing with the three energetic exercise bursts is ensuring you have really flicked the body's switch.

Now at the end of week one you would have done three exercise sessions with a total of 3 minutes actual exercise. So for the month, you would do 12 minutes of actual exercise.

I mentioned that this exercise program is apparently enough to influence the body's aerobic fitness: this apparently is dependent on your genes. The researchers at the University of Nottingham look for 11 tell tale genes and according to what they find, they can predict the amount of influence the exercises will have on aerobic fitness. They use a standard measure of VO2 max to measure aerobic fitness (VO2max is expressed either as an absolute rate in litres of oxygen per minute (l/min) or as a relative rate in millilitres of oxygen per kilogram of bodyweight per minute (ml/kg/min): the latter expression is often used to compare the performance of endurance sports athletes.

So there you have it: don't get a job sitting around all day; try and stand up at work; and if you can't get to the gym, do a twenty second burst of aerobic exercise.

Stomach fat is common among us today; even that slimmest person ever, stomach fat is still a problem for them. In the fitness world, the most enemy of many is actually the fat that accumulates in the stomach which is so easy to gain but very hard to lose.

The popularity of stomach exercises have always been in demand today of the so many attempts to lose the fat lying and accumulating around the stomach. However, spot reduction is not effective. Meaning, working out the stomach in the purpose of losing and burning fat will not give you your desired goal. What more effective is combining cardio session and abs exercises.

HOW IMPORTANT is...

Abs Exercises

These will not only help you lose stomach fat, but will also help you strengthen your abdominals as it provides full stability. Your "core", which is where all movement of the body is originated, is also strengthened thereby allowing more movement and flexibility. It also support and protect the internal organs which helps you in breathing, as in inhaling and exhaling.

Cardio Training

Cardio training is a total body workout where major group of muscles are also worked out. As being told, feeding muscles can give them more chance to burn calories. It also helps improve the pumping ability of the heart, the flow of blood circulation and oxygen all over the body.

Combination of Cardio and Abs Exercise to Lose Stomach Fat

  • Abs Exercises
  • If this is your first time to dwell on exercise, start with the easy and moderate ones, an exercise that will not shock your body leasing to trauma, tension and pain. This will prepare you to a more intense later on. When you are comfortable and find no challenge anymore in doing the exercise, you can move on to the regular exercises.

WARNING: Keep your movements smooth and slow; do not overexert your body. When doing the abs exercise, give so much support for your back. Warming up and cooling down before and after the exercise for 15 minutes is necessary.

Starting Exercise

Sit - ups

  • Lie flat on the floor on an exercise mat with your knees bent as feet still flat on the floor.
  • Place your hands behind the head and elbows out.
  • Now, with your safe position, inhale and exhale... and raise upper body from the floor.
  • As much as possible, bring chest closer to the knees.
  • Hold in such position for a second and then get back to the starting position
  • Do 3 sets for 10 -15 counts.

Stomach Tuck

  • Sit straight and upright against the back of a chair with your feet flat on the floor.
  • Now, exhale and at the same time do a stomach tucking (stomach in).
  • Hold your stomach in for 2-3 seconds and breathe in as you allow your stomach into a normal position.
  • Repeat the steps several times a day. You can do it anytime, watching television, before sleeping, studying, etc.

Waist Twists

  • Again, sit straight on a chair with your feet flat on the floor and few inches apart.
  • Place your fingertips on your waists so the arms are bent at the elbows.
  • Now, slowly and gently twist your elbows, arms and shoulders just like turning to look over your shoulder. Your head must follow around with the upper part of your body.
  • During this exercise, your abdominal muscles must be kept tensed and contracted.
  • As you are comfortable with it, do it also on the other side and then get back to the center or to the normal position and repeat the steps.

Regular Abdominal Exercises

The Crunch

  • Lie on your back with feet flat on the floor and legs must be bent at a 45 degree angle; your hands must be resting under the neck.
  • Lift your upper body and head from the floor and move towards the knees as possible; your feet, buttocks and lower back must be on the floor.
  • Lower again the head and upper body to the floor and repeat the step for 3 sets with 15 counts.

Reverse Crunch

  • Lie on your back on the floor with an exercise mat; make sure you are holding into a table leg to keep you stable during the exercise.
  • Raise your legs up to the ceiling and knees slightly bent;
  • Lower it down few inches above the floor; Feet and legs must not touch the floor.
  • Repeat the step and then return to the starting position.

Best Abdominal Exercises

Bicycle

  • Lie flat on the floor and back pressed against the floor.
  • Place your hands beside or under your head and bring your knees up to the ceiling or about 45 degree angle and then slowly go through pedal like motion on a bicycle.
  • Now, touch your left elbow to your right knee, then your right elbow to your left knee.
  • Do 3 sets for 15 counts.

Crunch on an exercise ball

  • With an exercise ball, sit on it and feet flat on the floor.
  • Allow the ball to roll back slowly until you feel your thighs and torso are corresponding with the floor.
  • Now, contract your abdominals as you raise your upper body for a crunch.
  • Repeat the steps and do it, 3 sets for 15 counts.

Cardio Trainings

These are done 30 minutes daily to help you burn your overall body fats which in turn help you lose stomach fat.

These are the following:

  • Brisk walking
  • Tread milling
  • Bicycling
  • Swimming
  • Hiking
  • Jogging
  • Aerobics

Doing all of the exercise to lose stomach fat will not totally lose the stomach fat you have been desiring to lose all your life. The exercises are the biggest factor, but doing it without any diet will never be that effective. So, the best thing you can do is to do the mentioned above exercise gracefully and bind it with your special diet if you really want to see good results. More so, patience and determination are the main tools to keep you on track, so aside from the 2 main points, be patient and determined to lose stomach fat.

Stay Lean and Healthy With These 9 Essential Exercise Tips

Exercise is so important to your physical health in general, but there are many other reasons why you should be taking part in physical activities.
Did you know that women who regularly exercise are less likely to get breast cancer? Regular exercise also helps prevent obesity; obesity has been shown to reduce fertility and lessen the odds of becoming pregnant. Regular exercise also reduces stress, giving you a sense of calmness and boosting confidence.
So yes - we know that exercise is important for women's health; but it can sometimes be tough to fit it into our busy lifestyles. Here are some tips to help you make exercise a regular part of your life!
1. Get Your Priorities Straight!
If you want to get more exercise into your schedule, you have to make it a priority - that means setting goals.
Find a time that will be easiest for you to schedule in your exercise: in the morning? While the kids are at school? After work? Also, decide how long you want to exercise each day - can you do an hour or will a half an hour work better in your schedule?
2. Find Exercises You Enjoy
There are so many different exercise routines you can take part in; find a few that you like so that you'll be more likely to stick to them.
Some people prefer walking or jogging outside, others prefer doing a treadmill or stair climbing machine. Even climbing the stairs in your home or doing aerobic exercises to a DVD are effective and can be fun.
If you don't do well on your own, you may be more motivated by joining a local fitness class like a Zumba dance class. These more structured types of exercise can help you lose weight quickly and keep you motivated.
3. Have Realistic Exercise Goals
Don't overdo it when you exercise. Set weekly and monthly goals that are realistic and reachable; otherwise you'll get frustrated with your progress and may give up.
4. Exercise with a Partner!
A partner is a great way to stay motivated. You can encourage each other on the days when you just don't feel up to it. It can also relieve the boredom during a long walk.
5. Consistent Action Wins The Race
It's consistency that makes an exercise program work. You have to dedicate yourself to making that appointment every single time.
There is no kind of exercise that will help you improve your health if you aren't doing it on a consistent basis.
6. Do What Suits You
If your exercise regimen doesn't fit your routine, you won't do it. It's that simple.
If you can consistently hit the gym every day, that's awesome. But if you won't, then there's no problem with working out at home. When you're dealing with work, housecleaning, kids and more, it's hard enough to find the motivation to exercise; even harder to get dressed to drive to the gym.
Save money and save time by getting a home treadmill or exercise bike and you can do your workouts while watching the evening news.
7. Exercise When You're Feeling Energetic
You should do your exercise at the time of day when you've got the most energy. If you're a morning person, get up an hour earlier and get it done.
If you hate the mornings, do your exercise after work, before you cook dinner. Just don't do it too late at night; it can cause trouble getting to sleep.
8. Get Something To Motivate You
Motivation is the thing that will keep you exercising even when you don't want to. Maybe it's an upcoming vacation or high school reunion; maybe it's something as simple as that sexy little dress you bought - but have your eyes on some sort of prize!
9. Results Don't Happen Overnight...
No matter how dedicated and consistent you are, the perfect body doesn't suddenly appear overnight. You need to be patient and stick with it. Setting short term goals is one way to have visible achievements that keep you motivated.
These tips will help you whether you're trying to lose weight or just looking for overall better health. Don't stress out if you fall off the wagon once in a while!
One day of missed exercise isn't the end of the world; just pick it up again tomorrow. And remember to always drink plenty of water and eat healthy foods.

How To Make Workouts Fun: 7 Tips That Work!

Working out naturally produces endorphins, enhances your mood, and effectively sheds weight. Yet, some people avoid the gym like the plague. Why? Maybe it's just not that fun.
Many people lose their motivation to exercise before they even get started. They have numerous excuses such as they're too tired, there's not enough time, the gym is boring, etc.
However, if you want to get in good physical shape, consistent exercise is imperative to your fitness routine no matter if it is stretching, weight resistance or cardio. Ideally, you need to devote a minimum of 20 minutes a day to keep (or get) your body in top physical form.
If your current workout routine has lost its appeal or you're simply bored with it, try the following 7 tips to liven things up to rejuvenate your fitness goals.
1. Tired Of Your Same, Uninspiring Cardio Workout?
Take a break from your typical cardio workout and go out dancing for the night. An entire night of intense dancing will burn an insane amount of calories (without the alcohol of course).
Dancing is a fun, exhilarating and exciting change of pace to a boring routine cardio workout. Not only is dancing enjoyable, it works every part of your body in addition to significantly increasing your heart rate to enhance your cardio health. So, put on your dancing shoes, hit the dance floor instead of the gym, and dance those calories away!
2. Be Aware Of Your Willpower - And Use It
How many times have you heard the phrase, "I'll do my workout tomorrow"? Don't wait too long since tomorrow never comes. You must draw strength from your willpower and do it today.
Re-work your schedule so that you will always have time to get a 20-minute workout in every day. Once you get accustomed to it, it will simply become a part of your daily routine.
3. Develop Your Own Personal Mantra Relative To Your Health Goals
Your mindset toward reaching your fitness goals is just as important as the physical aspect of your workout routine. Enthusiasm and self-assuredness play a key role in achieving your goals.
Create a few special mantras and let them play repeatedly in your mind while you workout to remind yourself why you are working so hard. For example: "I'm going to look like a million dollars in my favorite bikini this summer!"
4. Blog About Your Fitness Goals And How You Are Progressing
Start a blog to follow your own points of progress or join an online fitness forum to learn new ideas and techniques relative to your particular health objectives.
Blogging creates accountability and answerability to yourself and the others you interact with online. You will gain insight from a community that is driven by the same aspirations and passions that you have. Not only will others inspire and motivate you, but you will inspire, motivate and encourage them as well.
5. Change Up Your Workout Regimen
Every now and then, changing your surroundings to keep your motivation going in relation to working out is necessary.
Since most gyms are typically boring and somewhat unimaginative, indulge yourself to a change of pace by experimenting with a new dance studio; or get outside to play a refreshing outdoor sport.
6. A Love And Hate Relationship
Many people absolutely despise going to the gym and working out even though they know how beneficial it is to their health. On the other hand, most people love to watch television. So, why not combine the two to ease your time spent in the gym?
While you are exercising, turn on your favorite TV program to pass the time quicker as you burn off those calories. It's a win-win situation!
7. Set Up A Little Friendly Competition
Make your time in the gym a bit more interesting. Initiate a friendly wager with a workout buddy and compete for a predetermined prize. Whichever one of you hits their target first gets the reward for whatever you are competing for. It could be something as simple as a new tube of lipstick, or something with higher stakes such as a buying a new outfit for the winner of your competitive venture.

7 Exercise Alternatives To Going To The Gym

We've all had those days that no matter how good our intentions are, we just can't seem to get up and get to the gym. But don't let it get you down - there are exercises you can do at home to benefit both body and mind.
This article has seven different exercise alternatives for those days you just can't make it to the gym.
1. Lunges
As you walk to the bus stop or train station in the morning, why not throw in a few walking lunges to get the old heart pumping? You'll wake up muscles and mind and feel fit by the time you get to the office.
Of course, you may get a few odd glances, but it should be clear that you're doing some exercise - don't worry about them!
2. Seated Hip Rolls On A Chair
While sitting in your car at a stoplight or at your computer at work, here's a great core exercise you can do:
Tighten up your abdominal muscles and roll your hips back and frontwards. Do it ten times, then rest a moment and do it again.
You can also get some great ab work in by holding your abs tight then alternate lifting one hip and then the other.
3. Calf Raises
Another great seated exercise is the calf raise.
You have to keep your knees bent for this exercise, so it's a great one to do when you've got to be seated for long periods of time. It's very simple to do; you simply roll your heel up and down. When you bring the heel down to the ground, lift the toes up.
Add a little more challenge to this exercise by putting a book on your thighs to add a little extra weight.
4. Overhead Lifts
You can even fit in exercises while shopping or cooking! The grocery store and the kitchen are great places to get in some overhead lifts - exercise for your upper arm and deltoids.
In the store, take anything with a little weight to it - water bottle, soup can, bag of beans - and hold it at chest level. Next, lift it up over head, straightening your arms so that they're next to your ears, then lower it back to your chest. Repeat this exercise twenty times.
In the kitchen, take a pot of vegetables that you've prepared for cooking and raise it straight up over your head. Hold in this position for one minute. This is for the core, and improves balance as well as posture.
Want a little more challenge? Do some calf raises while holding the pot overhead.
5. Counter Pushups And Planks
If you're running errands and need to wait at a pick-up counter, here's a perfect little exercise you can squeeze in.
Lean forward onto the counter, holding your weight up with your arms, and do a few pushups off of it. Or, do side plank: placing your right hand on the counter, leave your left hand at your side. Lower you right hip and hold, then switch side. This is a great little stretch for the external obliques.
6. Squats
While watching TV, you can get in a mini workout at each commercial break. Stand up from your seat, then start to sit again, but stop right before you actually touch the chair, and then stand up again. Do as many of these as you can before your show starts again.
When the programs starts back up, squat down over your seat and hold it for 30 seconds. This is an amazing workout for your thighs and gluts; see how many you can do in each commercial break!
7. Planks
Want to get your heart rate up but don't have much time? Get down in the plank position with your elbows and toes supporting your weight. Bring your right knee up to meet your right triceps - without touching the ground. Return to the start position, and then do your left knee.
Do as many repetitions as possible in thirty seconds.

3 Common Excuses For Avoiding Your Workout - And How to Banish Them From Your Life!

Every single day, you can find at least one "reason" why you simply can't do your workout today. But we know they're really just excuses that are trying to crush your motivation!
Don't let them take control - banish those excuses! Here, we're going to list three of the most common excuses we hear from people for not getting their workout in. And we're going to tell you how to kick those negative thoughts out of your life and get exercising!

Excuse #1: I'm Too Busy!
How to Banish It: Take your calendar, your day planner, whatever it is you use to schedule your appointments - and schedule in your exercise time just like any other important appointment you might have. By having it down in writing, it becomes more of a commitment - plus you've already set the time aside.
If that's not enough to convince you, here's an experiment for the next week: Keep a record of all your activities - ALL of them - tracking how you spend each minute of the day. You may find that you've got a lot of wasted time in your day (Three hours of online solitaire - really?) that you can cut out and use for exercising. There are little things that seem to suck the minutes out of the day - but by tracking them, you realize how much time you're really wasting.
Excuse #2 - I Just Don't Have The Energy After A Day Of Work
What to Banish It: While it seems like the opposite of what you would believe, doing an aerobic exercise for 20-30 minutes can actually increase your energy and make you more mentally alert. That's because exercise causes your body to release endorphins, a chemical that can cause feelings of euphoria; the so-called "runner's high."
Of course, that kicks in after you start exercising; if you need a boost to get going, eat an apple about 30 minutes beforehand. The sugars in the fruit will give you a small boost to help you get going.
Excuse #3 - I Have Kids And Can't Just Leave Them Behind
What You Can Do: While being a mom often means putting your children's needs ahead of your own, that shouldn't apply to exercising. Here are a few ways you can continue to get your workout in:
  • Arrange exercise times with some other neighborhood mommies. You can take turns babysitting while each one gets her workout done. Having a network of friends in similar situations can also give you great support to stay on point.
  • Buy a jogging stroller so the kids can go with you on your run. You can find them for one, two or even three kids! Too expensive? Check Freecycle, eBay and Craigslist for secondhand models.
  • If your kids are a little older, have them join you on bike, skates or skateboard! Exercising together is a great time to bond with your kids, and you're setting an excellent example that will hopefully follow them all their lives.
