Ignorance Is NOT Bliss, It's Poison

So, I am gonna go ahead & let ya know, I am getting nitty-gritty on this one. Nothing fires me up more than people telling me (in nicer words, most of the time) that I am a bad mom. I have 5 children, all boys. They are 11, 10, 6, 4 & 2 years old. They are all healthy with no serious health issues. The 6 year old has only had SOME vaccines & the 2 & 4 year old have had maybe 1 each. They eat lots of fruits & veggies. I can not keep sweet peppers or apples anywhere within reach of my 4 year old. They have no vitamin deficiencies & they are far FAR from malnourished.

So, why do people keep saying my children are "deprived"? That they are 'missing out' on 'fundamental right of passage' things kids should do? WHAT? Oh, that's right, having diabetes by the time you reach 18 is so common now, why protect our kids from it in the first place, right? All the other kids are on add/ADHD meds, why not feed my kids the sugar the others get & then give them prescription drugs that have 'serious' side effects! Yea, seizures, 'ticks', death & suicidal thoughts... Yea, I kinda consider those serious side effects. Especially when I can give them the magic of good, whole foods that have not been processed or genetically modified & get them outside playing or even inside exercising.

My god, I am a horrible mother.

I have a LOT of friends that are fine with taking the kids out. To restaurants. To fast food places. For ice cream. Maybe I should start acting as appalled at them as they do to me.

Sure, I open my mouth & usually give advice very lovingly of a better alternative, but I do not scoff in disgust & say, "What deprived kids".

Yea, I HAVE had the luxury of being a stay-at-home mom for the past 6, almost 7 years. And I have done a TON of Googleing & research on what companies use what, what chemicals are bad, what foods are best. And yes, I most certainly have shared, S H A R E D this information. Why? Because I love my family. I love my friends. I love their children & I realize that not everyone is able or willing to do the research. I also realize that knowing all the things I have learned has been a great burden. You think I enjoy smiling at my kids art birthday parties & gatherings & saying "No way in hell you are eating that"? No, I love my kids very much. And I know I am doing what is best for them.

Do you know that our children's generation is the very first generation that is NOT EXPECTED TO OUTLIVE THEIR PARENTS! Let me say that again, OUR CHILDREN ARE EXPECTED to die before we do. I personally, have a major problem with that. I will do everything in my power to see that doesn't happen with my kids. Such a bad mom, I know... my poor, neglected, deprived children. I may even be able to bounce my grand kids on my knees. shame shame.

Oh, the money, seemingly, people can stop for McDonald's, you know, there's a dollar menu! But they can not afford good foods. We feed 7 mouths. Do you want to know our food budget for an entire month?
$600. Less than a hundred dollars per mouth for 28, or 30 or 31 days. We eat 5 times per day breakfast (steel cut oats with cinnamon, maple or honey & a banana & orange juice NOT from concentrate!) snack #1: fruits, nuts, trail mix, sweet potato muffins, It varies. lunch:usually pb & j on homemade bread (bread machine $40, ingredients for 2 weeks worth of bread cost $16 approx.) snack #2: variant of snack #1 and dinner; well dinners are everything from tacos/ loaded nachos to chicken to stews. And again, I know a lot of families have both parents working & box dinners are soooo easy. My dinners usually take me an hour if I have nothing prepped beforehand. The crock pot is your friend. Fall in love with beans (we get meat usually once a week).

I am in no way saying you can not ever eat a piece of cake or eat out or anything of the sort. I am just fed up with being scoffed at for feeding my family the best I can. Do my kids get treats? Yes, do I make sure there's no chemicals & other harmful things in it? Yes. Am I afraid to give my kids sugar? Nope. Do they need it though? Nope. Do I feel bad when I tell my kids no when other kids are having a treat? No, I do not. Not anymore. Do I feel bad when my kids DO eat that stuff? Yes, yes I do. My 2 oldest recently were out with family and ate some donuts. An hour later they were sick & had tummy aches and headaches from it. You know the fist thing they said "We shouldn't have ate those donuts". You know what they voluntarily passed up just yesterday at their cousins birthday party? Cake. But they did eat the pizza. And it was OK. Moderation is OK with me. So long as it's not Twinkies McDonalds or something along that line, that is never OK with me.

My kids are very healthy & happy. We feed them well. They eat 5 times a day. We've done the legwork on not only what to feed our kids, but when. Please, stop saying my kids are deprived. If you have questions about foods or recipes or whatever, message me! I LOVE helping teach people about food & nutrition.
