The History and Re-Creation of Valentine's Day

Where did this romantic day of cards, flowers, chocolate, hearts, cupids, and ribbons come from in our history? And what is new in our approach to this historic day? Dressing yourself and your littlest ladies up for the occasion!
Way before the day took on a romantic tone with cards, flowers and chocolates being presented to someone special, this was the celebration of Saint Valentine, which in Latin translated to 'Valentinus' and started way back in Roman time, 1000 - 1300, or the 12th and 13th centuries. This was named 'The Feast of Saint Valentine'.
This Saint actually became imprisoned for his work of ministering to Christians and for performing marriages for many soldiers who were forbidden to marry. And remember that in this day and age in the Roman Empire, Christians were persecuted.
Saint Valentine was supposedly executed on the 14th of February North of Rome. This is the day we now celebrate as the day of love and courtship which started to take on the now popular act of giving a 'Valentine' to your love on the 14th of February, back in the 15th century.
It was rumored that while imprisoned this Saint befriended and healed the daughter of his jailer and was said to have written to her on the day of his execution 'From your Valentine', and now, rumor or no, this is the most romantic part of Valentine's history, which better explains today's Valentine's Day sentiment!
Naturally the Valentine we celebrate was from the Roman Catholic denomination, but was also later adopted by the Lutherans and the Anglicans.
Today in history we are progressing in our celebration of Valentine's day by not only presenting our loved ones with cards, chocolates and flowers; we are also starting to dress the part with t-shirts, pajamas, underwear, and outer wear that demonstrate the love of the day with hearts, cupids, and now even beautiful hair accessories for the little 'angels' in our lives. Hats, clips and headbands decorated with ribbons, flowers, feathers, and all kinds of bright and sparkly adornment, representing love, are a must have for every little girl and baby girl in the family. Celebrate in style!
So there we have an interesting look at where this 'quixotic' celebration originated. If you are anything like me, you thought that it was purely an invention of the fiscal gurus to fill the gap between Christmas and St Patrick's Day. We live and learn!
