Between the styling gel, shampoo, conditioners, chemical treatments, blow-dryers, and styling tools, our hair takes a lot of abuse. All the different things we do to it to make it look the way we want can actually damage it, making it look and feel lifeless and dull.
By applying any of the 3 natural oils we'll discuss in this article, you can make your hair smooth and healthy, and restore its bounce and shine. Not only that, but these oils can also promote healthy hair growth!
1. Extra-Virgin Olive Oil
We know what you're probably thinking - who wants to put salad dressing on their hair and smell like an Italian recipe all day? Don't worry, you won't. Olive oil is a natural moisturizer and conditioner that help make hair stronger, while reducing dandruff and hair loss. Here's how to use it as a hair treatment:
Step #1: Combine half a cup of extra-virgin olive oil with your favorite essential oil, such as rosemary or lavender. Mix well. Let stand for 24 hours in a cool, dark place.
Step #2: Pour 1 tablespoon of this mixture into your palm. Warm the mixture by rubbing your hands together.
Step #3: Use your fingertips to massage the mixture into your hair. Moving your fingertips in a circular motion, work from your scalp to the tips of your hair.
Step #4: Fasten a plastic bag over your hair with an elastic headband. Allow 30 minutes for the treatment to work.
Step #5: Rinse the mixture out of your hair, then shampoo.
2. Argan Oil
Argan oil comes from the kernels of the Argan tree, which is native to Morocco and is now an endangered plant species. This makes Argan oil expensive, but it is worth the high cost. Its essential fatty acids lend strength to the proteins in your hair, reducing split ends and making the hair stronger.
Argan oil is also rich in vitamin E, which repairs chemical damage to hair, and it moisturizes and adds shine to your hair without making it feel greasy.
To apply, start by rubbing the oil into your hands to warm it up, as with the olive oil. Then, apply to your hair from the scalp to the tips, as described above. To distribute the oil more evenly, comb or brush it through your hair. After applying argan oil, wrap a towel around your hair and leave it in for an hour before rinsing and shampooing.
3. Coconut Oil
Coconut oil not only reminds you of vacations on sunny, tropical beaches, but it has a whole range of benefits:
- Coconut oil is also rich in vitamin E, which is necessary for the healthy growth of your hair.
- As a natural emollient, coconut oil bins restores your hair's shine and body by sealing moisture into each strand.
- The lauric and capric acids found in coconut oil are antimicrobial agents. Microbes in the scalp and roots of the hair are a major cause of hair loss, so coconut oil can help to slow down or stop hair loss.
- Coconut oil contains lots of saturated fats, which help keep the skin on the scalp from flaking off, reducing dandruff.
Coconut oil should be massaged through your hair in the same way as described earlier in this article, about 30 minutes prior to washing your hair. Use a shampoo made from natural ingredients and warm water to rinse it out of your hair.
